Quick Owyhee Update

The Owyhee River on January 24th, 2017

Flows below the dam were bumped up to 338cfs then were bumped again to 565cfs today. Where they stop is anyone's guess. It is still possible to fish at these flows but wading will become much more difficult. Streamers, streamers, streamers. The last year we saw flows like this around this time of year was 2011. As long as the river was wadeable I did very well on streamers that Spring. If you have a drift boat it's possible to float at these flows as well.

My new calculation has pushed back the date of the the reservoir filling to March 27th, but again, that does not indicate when they might decide they need to dump water and turn up flows even more. I suspect that we don't have a lot of time before they really unleash the flows. Todays bumps are just the beginning, and at some point the flush will be severe. The South Mountain Snotel site still shows 59 inches of snow, and true run off hasn't even really started, yet the reservoir is 75% full. If we get some warm weather like is forecasted over the next week then it could really fill up fast. Keep an eye on things, and I will do my best to keep you all up to date.
